Desert Mountain Alpaca Ranch offers free tours for special interest groups. The tours can last from 30 minutes to 2 hours in length depending on age of group and interest. The tour covers the following topics:
- History - Background information on alpacas such as country of origin and how the industry got started in the United States.
- Alpaca Facts - We will go over the physical characteristics of alpacas and also discuss the current pricing for alpacas.
- Shelters: Alpacas need shelter to shield them from the elements. We will show you how Desert Mountain Alpaca Ranch is set up, but also discuss other options for maintaining alpacas.
- Maintenance - Although alpacas are considered to be low maintenance we still need to care for them. We will discuss the problem areas on alpacas and what is done to care for them. Since alpacas are prey animals they will not allow you to see that they are sick. Once you do realize that there is a problem it may be already too late. Alpaca maintenance and observation can help assure the rancher that their herd is healthy.
- Nutrition - Feed amount and types can differ between crias, adults, and pregnant dams.
- Waste Management - Composted alpaca manure is great for gardens. Alpaca manure is considered to be better than cow and horse manure.
- Breeding - We always want to improve our herd through the breedings. There are typically 3 characteristics we try to change or improve in every breeding. We will also discuss pricing and gestation period.
- Crias - Learn how many crias are born to a dam, what to do with a premature cria, understand that not all dams make good mothers and how you can help, and what to do with a non milk producing dam.
- Shows and Auctions - Find out where you can go see an alpaca show and/or auction. Be surprised to hear how much the last highest selling male sold for.
- Fiber - Alpaca fiber has been called the fiber of the gods. Learn the characteristics and feel first hand why it has earned such a name.
- DMAR Ranch Store - Visit the store where you can purchase your alpaca product.
